Jesus in the Talmud; His Personality His Disciples and His Sayings Bernhard Pick 9781117619286 Books Reviews
In the first century of the Common Era, some Jews, as is well-known, began to believe that Jesus was the messiah they had hoped would arrive to save them. At first, these Jews were no different than other Jews except for this belief. However, because of various things that happened, some of these Jews began to consider themselves different and no longer wanted to attend synagogue with other Jews. Soon, unfortunately, the disparity between the two groups intensified, as frequently happens with brothers who develop different ideas. Each side began to make disparaging statements against the other and many of these statements were written down. This is a great shame because people should be allowed to believe what they want to believe as long as they do not hurt one another. Unfortunately, even today, many people do not understand this.
Bernhard Pick points out the approximately half dozen disparaging statements that Jews seem to have made about Jesus that were incorporated into the Talmud. These statements are not clearly referring to Jesus; in fact they mention a person with another name. However, Church leaders felt they were derogatory statements against Jesus and although there were so few of them – of course, even one is bad – they burned entire Talmuds in 1242. In 1631, Jews removed all the possible insulting references to Jesus from the Talmuds.
Let us hope that the day will come soon when all people will recognize that foolish statements by people of the past should not destroy what can be very helpful relations with all people. As the Jewish sage Moses Maimonides said in the twelfth century, “The truth is the truth no matter what its source.” We can learn from all people, improve ourselves and society.
The editing of the kindle version was horrible. I tried to read it, parts were intelligible but I just couldn't do it.
great
